This course will provide all of the necessary courses mandated by the state of Florida.

Preventing Medical Errors
As required by the Florida Legislature, Section 456.013(7) - this two-hour course includes root-cause analysis, error reduction and the prevention of medical errors.

 

The purpose of this course is to provide health care professionals with an overview of the problem of medical errors, factors contributing to the occurrence of these errors, and steps that can be taken by institutions and individual care providers to reduce medical errors in key care settings.

At the conclusion of this course, the participant will be able to:

  • Recognize common performance and diagnostic errors
  • Describe the elements of a root cause analysis
  • Identify risk management measures designed to prevent dental errors and increase patient's safety
  • Review different type of medical errors that can be encountered in the dental office
  • Discuss active and latent errors
  • Realize how to ensure patient safety and reduce the likelihood of medical errors
  • Learn how to assess a sentinel event through root cause analysis and techniques for reducing risks to health, safety, and malpractice
  • Discuss the prevention of specific medical errors
  • Learn from past accounts of medical errors by dental professionals
  • Acknowledge an ethical and legal duty as a practicing dental professional to avoid medical errors, and to act morally and professionally should a medical error occur.

Recognizing Signs of Domestic Violence
This presentation qualifies for the two-hour course on Domestic Violence required at least every third biennium.

  • Define domestic violence/intimate partner violence.
  • Learn the different types of domestic violence/intimate partner violence.
  • Review a study of domestic violence statistics.
  • Identify the different theories as to the causes of domestic violence.
  • Discuss the role of the medical/dental professional.
  • Explain how to identify and respond to abuse victims.
  • List the guidelines for assessment and documenting a patient file.
  • Learn the applicable Florida Statutes
  • Discuss Florida statistics relating to domestic/intimate partner violence.

This activity has been planned and implemented in accordance with the Essential Areas and Policies of the Accreditation Council for Continuing Education through the joint sponsorship of the Florida Medical Association, Florida Atlantic University, and the American Dental Association. The Florida Medical Association is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education to provide continuing education credits for dentists and continuing medical education for physicians.

The Florida Medical Association designates this educational activity for a maximum of four (4) category 1 credits(s) toward the ADA Continuing Education Award or four (4) credits towards the AMA Physician’s Recognition Award. Each dentist or physician should claim only those credits that he/she actually spent in the activity.
